Who does ChatGPT recommend in Redding?

When someone asks ChatGPT for the best business in Redding, the answer is often built from directories, not from the businesses' own websites. In many local categories we've tested, the sources it cites are review platforms, quote marketplaces and professional association listings. A Redding business gets named by being complete and well-reviewed on those directories, consistent on its map listings, and plainly descriptive on its own site.

What happens when someone in Redding asks ChatGPT for a recommendation?

Picture a med spa owner on Hilltop Drive on a slow Tuesday in January. A friend mentions she asked ChatGPT "where should I get Botox in Redding?" and got three names. The owner tries it herself. Three practices come back, and none is hers. She has more Google reviews than two of them. She scrolls down to see where the AI got its information, and the links aren't to anyone's website at all. They're to a cosmetic treatment review site and a couple of directory pages.

That's the pattern we keep running into when we test local prompts for Shasta County categories. The AI isn't reading your homepage and deciding you're great. It's reading what a handful of trusted directories say about everyone in town, and repeating it.

We're a Redding agency, so we've spent a lot of time with this. The good news: once you see how the AI is building its answer, the path to getting named is pretty clear, and most of your competitors haven't figured it out yet.

Why does AI cite directories instead of your website?

Our founder Alex has a metaphor for answer engines: your business is a house, and the AI is a realtor who tours every listing before your customer does. (He lays it out in full in how to get your SaaS recommended by ChatGPT, which is written for software companies but uses the same house.)

For local businesses, that metaphor has a twist. A realtor doesn't decide what to show by driving around town reading yard signs. She pulls up the MLS, the shared listing database every agent trusts, because it's organized, comparable and kept up to date.

In local AI search, directories are the MLS. When someone asks about Botox, solar or braces in Redding, the AI wants sources that compare several providers in one place, with reviews, credentials and locations attached. A directory page does that. Your website, however nice, describes exactly one provider: you. So the AI leans on the directory to decide who's worth naming, and maybe checks your site afterward for details.

This shows up in different shapes depending on the category:

  • Aesthetics and med spas: cosmetic treatment review platforms like RealSelf, which pairs patient reviews and before-and-after photos with provider listings.
  • Solar: quote marketplaces like EnergySage, where homeowners compare bids from installers it has vetted.
  • Licensed professions: professional association "find a member" directories, like the American Association of Orthodontists' Find an Orthodontist locator, which lists AAO members.
  • Nearly everything: general review and map platforms, plus local "best of" lists.

This isn't only a hunch from our own testing. Across AI engines broadly, third-party platforms dominate citations: Peec AI's analysis of 30 million AI citations found sites like Reddit, YouTube, Yelp and Facebook among the ten most cited domains in March 2026 (Peec AI). Your own site is one voice. The directories are a chorus.

The four listings: how a Redding business gets named

Here's the framework we use with local clients. Think of it as four listings the realtor checks, in the order she trusts them. You want to be present, complete and consistent in all four.

ListingWhat it isWhat "good" looks like
1. The category MLSThe vertical directories AI cites for your tradeClaimed, complete profile with current reviews, photos and credentials
2. The map listingsGoogle Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business ConnectSame name, address, phone, hours and categories everywhere
3. The neighborsReviews, local press, chamber and community mentionsA steady stream of recent, specific reviews and real local mentions
4. Your own houseYour websitePlain answers on services, service area, prices and credentials

1. The category MLS: find the directories AI already trusts for your trade

Don't guess which directories matter. Ask the realtor.

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode and run the prompts your customers would type: "best roofer in Redding," "who installs solar in Shasta County," "orthodontist in Redding for adults." Then look at the sources each answer cites. Write down every domain. After ten or fifteen prompts, you'll see the same few directories show up again and again for your category. That's your MLS.

Then get your listing on each one in shape:

  • Claim the profile if it's claimable, and make sure you're the one controlling it.
  • Fill in every field. Services, service area, credentials, years in business, photos. Empty fields are empty rooms.
  • Point reviews there, too. If the AI cites a category directory for your trade, a handful of recent reviews on it may do more for AI visibility than another fifty on a platform it never cites.
  • Match your details to your Google Business Profile exactly.

Some of these directories are paid marketplaces, and some charge for upgraded placement. We'd look hard at the free listing first, and only pay where the AI is clearly citing the directory and the leads make sense for your margins.

2. The map listings: make every signpost say the same thing

If the county record, the listing and the mailbox all name a different owner, a realtor won't guess. Neither will the AI.

Your Google Business Profile is still the foundation of local visibility, and we cover it in depth in our local SEO guide for Redding. But AI answers draw on more than Google. Microsoft's Copilot draws on Bing, and Bing now reports how often sites are cited in Copilot and its AI summaries (Bing Webmaster Blog). Plenty of Redding businesses set up Google years ago and never touched Bing Places or Apple Business Connect.

Claim all three. Then check that your business name, address, phone, hours, website and primary category match exactly. Take a made-up example (made up on purpose, because we're not going to call out a neighbor's listings in public): "Pinecrest Heating & Air" on Google, "Pinecrest HVAC" on Bing and "Pinecrest Heating and Air Conditioning Inc." on Yelp looks like three different houses to a machine. (One sign, one mailbox, one name on the deed.)

3. The neighbors: earn the reviews and mentions AI reads

Redding runs on word of mouth. Plenty of people here pick a contractor because someone in a Facebook group or at church said so. The AI is trying to do the same thing at scale: figure out who the neighbors vouch for.

What helps:

  • Recent, specific reviews. "They fixed our AC the same day during a 110-degree week in July" tells the AI more than "Great service!" You can't script reviews, but you can ask at the right moment and make it easy.
  • Local press and community mentions. A story in the local paper, a chamber spotlight, a sponsorship of a Shasta County event that gets written up online. These are the neighbors talking about you in public.
  • Answering real questions where people ask them. Community forums and Reddit threads get cited by AI. Show up in your own name, be helpful, and don't spam.

One honest caveat: much of the Facebook group chatter that makes or breaks local businesses here happens in private groups, which AI crawlers generally can't read. That word of mouth still matters enormously for your phone ringing. It just doesn't count as a public neighbor for the AI.

4. Your own house: make your site easy to describe

Your website may not be the first source the AI cites, but it's often where the AI checks details, and it's what a customer sees when they click through. Make it easy to describe in one sentence:

[Business] is a [type of business] serving [Redding and which towns] that specializes in [what you're best at].

Use that sentence on your homepage, your About page and your profiles. Then make sure your site answers the questions customers actually ask, in plain text near the top of each page:

  • Which towns you serve: Redding, Anderson, Shasta Lake, Palo Cedro, Cottonwood, Red Bluff, wherever you actually go.
  • What you charge, at least as honest ranges.
  • Your licenses, certifications and credentials.
  • How fast you can come out, and what happens after someone calls or fills out the form.

If your service area, prices or credentials only live in a PDF or an image, the AI can't read them. Put them in words on the page.

How do you check whether ChatGPT is naming you?

Run your own walkthrough once a month. It takes about 20 minutes.

  1. Write ten prompts your customers would really type. Mix the plain ("best dentist in Redding") with the specific ("emergency plumber Shasta Lake on a weekend").
  2. Run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode.
  3. Record four things: were you named, was the description right, who was named instead, and which sites were cited.
  4. Compare month to month. AI answers vary from one run to the next, so one bad result means nothing. A trend over three months means something.
  5. Add a form option. Put "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" in your "How did you hear about us?" field, so you can catch customers who found you that way.

The "which sites were cited" column is the most valuable one. It turns into your to-do list: every directory that keeps showing up, and where you're missing, is a listing to fix.

Does this matter for every Redding business?

It matters most for considered purchases: the decisions people research before they call. Med spas, orthodontists, dentists, solar installers, roofers, HVAC, attorneys, wedding venues. Those are the categories where people ask an AI "who's the best" instead of just tapping the nearest result on a map.

It matters less if your customers pick you on proximity and impulse. Nobody asks ChatGPT for a philosophical comparison of gas stations on Cypress Avenue.

Seasonality plays in, too. A Lake Shasta houseboat rental or a summer tourism business gets researched by visitors planning trips months in advance, and that planning stage is where an AI assistant is likely to come up. A roofer's spike might come after the first big storms of the season. Do your monthly checks before your busy season, not during it.

If you run a home service company, we've put together a more specific playbook on marketing for Redding home service companies that covers reviews, Local Services Ads and booking flow.

Where we'd start

If you only have one afternoon, do this:

  1. Run five prompts for your category and write down the cited directories.
  2. Claim and complete your profile on the top two.
  3. Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, and match them to your Google Business Profile.
  4. Put your one-sentence description, service area and price ranges in plain text on your homepage.

That's most of the gap between being invisible and being one of the three names.

We're here in Redding, and this is the kind of work we like doing. If you'd like us to run your category's prompts and show you who the AI names instead of you, and why, book a call with us.

Questions people ask next.

Can I pay to get recommended by ChatGPT as a local business?

Not in the answer itself. You can pay for upgraded listings on some directories, and ChatGPT now runs ads beside its answers, but OpenAI says advertisers can't shape or rank its responses. The recommendation is earned by being well-represented in the sources the AI reads.

Does my Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT?

Yes, but it isn't the only map listing that counts. Keep your Google Business Profile complete, then claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect and make every detail match. Consistency across listings helps AI engines trust they're describing the right business.

Which directories should my Redding business be listed on?

It depends on your category, and the best way to find out is to ask the AI. Run your customers' prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity and note which sites get cited. Prioritize the directories that show up repeatedly for your trade over generic listing sites.

How long does it take to start showing up in AI answers?

Fixing listings and site copy can show up within a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on how often the AI's sources refresh. Building reviews and local mentions takes longer. Check monthly and judge the trend over a quarter.

Is AI search replacing Google for local businesses in Redding?

No. Most people still use Google and Google Maps, and that's where the bulk of local calls come from. AI is an added front door, especially for researched purchases, so the smart move is to be strong in both.
